An immigrant from Phnom Penh, Cambodia Laro left his family as a teenager and escaped violence and persecution by leaving his homeland with nothing but the clothes on his back.  He spent time in a refugee camp before arriving in Carpentersville and in District 300 classes.  Audry Lakin, his French teacher, wrote about his courage at such a young age.  She learned more from him than he did from her.

As a Senior at Dundee-Crown Mr. Tan received the Young J. Change Memorial Award.  He persevered and received his citizenship to what he believes is the greatest country in the world. Mr. Tan joined the FBI in 1997 as a Special Agent.  He has risen through the ranks and is currently the Legal Attache in Phnom Penyh, Cambodia for Vietnam and Cambodia.
