Artists Statement: The medium I'm using is glass mosaic. Mosaic is symbolic
of the puzzle every child must piece together as he or she constructs meaning from language. The way language
forms and clarifies thinking has always mystified me. I work with children who face challenges in language development, especially
in the domains of reading and writing, and I see how liberating it is when they finally break the code. Their struggle to
soar into the higher winds of thought is my constant inspiration. Language is not a function of our humanity;
it is the very thing that forces humanity upon us. Language impacts thought which, in turn, impacts behavior.
Through language we become. It never stops. It is a life-long becoming.
About the Artist
Bonnie Musselman, an Illinois native,
has been teaching since 1973. She graduated from DePaul, received her masters from National Louis University.
She has taught full curriculum grade levels from preschool to 8th grade. She
has taught 1st through 8th grade art. She has been a Title I reading teacher for
eight years in District 300.
Bonnie uses different media, especially stained glass,
mosaic, clay, beading, and weaving. She frequently infuses art into her reading lessons because she understands it aids comprehension
and allows her students to “show what they know” in an alternate format while their language skills are improving.
Bonnie enjoys been a writer and has written poetry over the years. She
loves to infuse words into her art projects regardless of medium. Recently she has focused on children’s
literature by writing a “chapter book” for 3rd-5th grade students on metacognition and the
creative process.
