Description A very unique desk that uses the old and the new. The student artists were able to use the new material from the new
high school and some of the old and incorporate the elements into the seat of the desk which is quite beautiful. Hampshire
High would be proud.

Artists Statement: The idea for our desk was spurred
by the changes our school and community are currently going through. While most of us are welcoming these changes with open
arms there are a few who are already lamenting, “what used to be.” New construction popping up on what used to
be productive farmland is all part of the trend towards Midwestern suburban sprawl. With this desk we would like to show how
we are trying to meet these new challenges with an open mind knowing that it is unavoidable and being done for the greater
good of the community. We are excited about getting a new high school and would like to be able to grow with these changes
gracefully by keeping the small town charm our community has always prided itself in. Our desk will show the transformation or metamorphosis of our school and community with
an image painted on the desktop of a barn door with a view of a cornfield and sky beyond. The image will slowly transition
on the seat to show encroaching new construction, which will be represented with construction debris as a symbol of growing
pains. The backrest of the seat will be covered in tile from the new school to represent the pristine, shiny quality, and
newness of things to come. The entire desk will be unified with a series of photographs of all things Hampshire. The photos
will be cut into footprint shapes and will “walk” through the entire visual time line.
About the Artists
Martin
Tomaszczyk: Is a photographer and a senior at Hampshire High School. “My art teacher asked
me if I could print her some pictures of Hampshire. Not only will it let others see my work, but I could also experience taking
more photos, and who knows what I can get. I really look forward to getting these pictures to my teacher.” Jigz Flojo:
Is a senior at Hampshire High School. “I took Design 1& 2 with Mrs. Larue freshman year. My senior year,
I had some time after 3rd block so I stopped in the Art room to see if I could be in her class on days I have practice. So
I spent 4th block hanging out in the Art room. And that is when Mrs. Larue asked if I wanted to be a part of the desk
project.”
Christina Kalenios: Is a senior at Hampshire High School. “I
have been interested in art since I was in elementary school and have pursued my interest by attending art classes in high
school. I have always loved to draw and sketch and while taking art class I have learned new techniques
and how to work through difficult tasks while still making a beautiful art piece.” Kim Karteiser:
Is a senior at Hampshire High School. “This is my fourth year of art and I have never been
given a more exciting project to work on. I’ve been taught many useful techniques, which makes me eager to work on this
deskthat has been handed to us. I have lived in Hampshire all my life so creating a desk to represent Hampshire
is going to be meaningful and special to me.”
